Nutritious choices made simple®
A few key recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee struck a chord with the Guiding Stars Scientific Advisory Panel. Specifically, Guiding Stars supports the recommendation to remove the restriction on dietary cholesterol intake given the lack of evidence linking dietary cholesterol to heart disease risk in the general population. Guiding Stars also expressed support for reducing the intake of added sugars, implementing changes to the Nutrition Facts Label, as well as consumer outreach and education to help achieve improved health for Americans.
Guiding Stars joined the national discussion about long awaited updates and revisions to the Nutrition Facts panel. At the heart of the proposed changes are thoughtful updates that will help consumers make informed and improved food choices. Learn more about Guiding Stars comments in support of FDA’s proposals.
Guiding Stars applauds the effort by First Lady Michelle Obama and the Food and Drug Administration to advocate for good nutrition and healthy families. On behalf of the Guiding Stars Scientific Advisory Panel – experts in the fields of food and nutrition science and public health who are all deeply committed to helping consumers make informed and better food choices – I offer our support and encouragement for a thorough review of the Nutrition Facts label – what’s working and what’s not. All carefully considered efforts to revise this information and make it more useful to all American consumers would be welcome.
In a major win for heart health in the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration has taken a significant first step toward eliminating harmful trans fats from foods. The agency has issued a preliminary determination that partially hydrogenated oils—the primary source of trans fat in desserts, frozen pizza, margarine and other processed foods—are no longer “generally recognized as safe.”
On Oct. 20, 2011, the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Food and Nutrition Board presented results and recommendations from the Committee on Examination of Front-of-Package Nutrition Ratings Systems and Symbols (Phase II).
The direction recommended by the IOM is strongly validating of the Guiding Stars nutrition guidance program, which has been in the marketplace now for five years.
