Oatmeal is always a warm, nutritious start to a cold, wintery day. This one is sweetened with applesauce and cinnamon. Shelf-stable ingredients make this a smart choice for cooking for your pantry.


  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ⅛ tsp. salt
  • ¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • Cinnamon to taste


  1. Pour the water, oats, and salt into a medium pot on the stovetop.
  2. Heat until it is boiling, then turn heat to low.
  3. Slowly stir in applesauce and cinnamon.
  4. Cook on low heat and continue to stir until desired texture is reached (5-7 minutes).
